Tim Shorten was born in Bolton, Lancashire. He studied at Bolton College of Art & Design, Preston Polytechnic Department of Fine Art, and Leeds Polytechnic.
On the surface of Tim Shorten's work, you may consider it to emanate nostalgia and romance, however surprisingly, this is not intentional. It is a fictional product of his imagination that was awoken by his potent childhood memories: "Train travel seemed very exciting and glamorous to me as a child, and the recent works based on railway stations evoke hazy recollections of those early experiences. I'm in my fifties now, and the 1960s shaped who I am."
Influenced by the likes of Edward Hopper, Stanley Spencer and David Hockney. "Throughout my career, I have constantly revised my methods; tried to refine my skills and discovered many new ways of doing things. Ive learned partly through the study of other artists, partly through lots of trial and error, and hugely from teaching students for 37 years. My paintings must tell a story (which ultimately will be your story rather than mine), and that's just the way it is for me."
